I also noticed that articles with hundreds of comments were loading significantly slower than pages with less comments. This made me reduce the number of comments per page to 50 root comments (plus their answers).

Today I noticed that WordPress added another JavaScript to ever page. The script in wp-inlcudes/l10n.js that is related to the admin bar that the WordPress developers added to one of the recent versions of the blogging platform.

While it is a small file with a size of 233 bytes it is still a script that is loaded by anyone, not just the admin of the blog. This somehow does not make a lot of sense. The important thing here is that the blog needs to make the request to load the element, not the time it takes to load the 223 bytes.

WordPress administrators may want to remove the JavaScript element from being loaded by every blog visitor to speed up the blog’s page loading times. The easiest way to remove the l10n.js from being loaded with WordPress is to unload it in the functions.php file in the WordPress theme folder.

All you need to do for that is to add the following line of code to the end of the functions.php file.

wp_deregister_script(‘l10n’);

Please note that this may disable part of the admin bars toolbar functionality. Users over at Stack Exchange have found a way to keep the JavaScript loaded for administrators of the blog.

That means that you can use Theme number 1 for your company, Theme number 2 for your personal page, etc.

Meanwhile, if anyone wants to grab the beta you’re more than welcome, as long as you give me feedback – I’ve only been able to test it on a limited selection of themes, so the more the merrier. It should detect whether your theme is HTML5 or not, and output either abbr> or acronym> appropriately (that’s the functionality I added, so obviously that’s the bit I’m most interested in feedback on).

Now, If, like me, you’re in the very disappointing situation that you haven’t uploaded WP into a folder on root, meaning your folders structure looks like this:
mydomain.com
- wp-admin
- wp-content
- wp-includes
index.php
and so on, then if you can’t see your images in the media library and/or in the posts, things get more complicated.
I found out that there appears to be some kind of supplemental error in the image upload location re-writing.
I observe the following for the location of images:

Image Location In Media Library: http://ralfengel.com/files//2009/12/why_comuters_overheat.jpg
Now that is weird, where in Matts name does the second / after files come from? And how can I get rid of it?

The Solution:
Use your FTP program, download .htaccess and open it with an editor.
Change your #uploaded files to read the following:

RewriteRule ^(.*/)?files/$ index.php [L]
RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?files/(.+) wp-includes/ms-files.php?file=$2 [L]

Save it, upload it (you may have to rename it since windows may have cut the . from htaccess, so make sure that on the root you see:
.htaccess
now, refresh your blog, media library, and feel the happiness overcome you, as all those lost thought images re-appear like by magic.

So, to recapitulate, here we have the solutions to two different Image (no show) problems with WordPress 3.0.
First, a WordPress 3.0 grammar filtering issue, changing WordPress into WordPress, second, an error in the .htaccess uploaded images location.

So, here are the step by step instructions on how to do a direct WP-MU 2.6.5. to WP 3.0 upgrade.

1. Make a Database backup
2. Backup of all WordPress files on your server root
3. Download wp 3.0…
4. edit wp-config (wp-config-sample.php)
5. deactivate plugins
6. upload all 3.0 files
7. Run the Upgrade function. do /wp-admin/upgrade.php 8. do /wp-admin you should get redirected to your admin pages
8. Updates and plugins

1. Make a backup of your database
Login to your phpMyAdmin. Depending on the version on your server views could be different. My MySQL version is 4.1.22 and my phpMyAdmin is 2.8.0.1.
After loging in you should see a split window, on the left your database and all the tables, on the right th MySQL functions. Find the “Export” link on this page and click on it (if you have more than one databases, you have to make sure to select the one running your WP-MU blog).
Select the “SQL” tick button
Select all the tables of your database
In “Structure” select:
Structure
Add DROP TABLE / VIEW / PROCEDURE / FUNCTION
Add IN NOT EXISTS
Add AUTO_INCREMENT value
Enclose table and field names with backquotes

do not select:
Add CREATE PROCEDURE / FUNCTION
and do not select:
Add into comments
Creation/Update/Check dates

In Data select:
Data
verify Maximal lenght of created query is 50000
and Export type is insert

On the bottom in “Save as file” select:
Save as file
Remember template
compression = zipped

Hit the “Go” button. You will get prompted to select a location where to save the file to.
That is all, your done backing up your complete WordPress MU Database.

2. Backup of all WordPress files on your server root
To make a backup copy of your WordPress files on the server you will have to use an FTP program like ACE FTP freeware. Login to your account and select all the WordPress folders and files. Select all files if you are not using your server for anything other than the WordPress MU installation.
Now right click on the selected files and select “Download”. This will take some time, so be pacient.

3. Download wp 3.0…
Go to the WordPress dot Org site to download the new WordPress 3.0. Unzip all the files.

4. edit wp-config (wp-config-sample.php)
You will have to edit the wp-config.php file to make the installation work properly with your previous settings. A few things will look different in the new wp-config file, but if you follow the instructions, things should work just fine.
A good help to do the editing is a html editor like ACE html. In the editor, open your old wp-config.php file, from your security copy backup, now open the wp-config-sample.php file in the uncompressed WordPress 3.0 folder.

5. deactivate plugins
Go to your WordPress Admin – Plugins page and deactivate all your plugins. This eliminates trouble with incompatibility of some Plugins that haven’t been tested with WordPress 3.0.

6. upload all 3.0 files
Use your FTP program to upload all the new 3.0 files from the unzip folder. When prompted check the overwrite option. This is not suggested by WordPress who suggest to delete all WordPress files from the server, but I choose to try the overwrite option, and it worked perfectly.
Upload will take time, so a have a coffee…

7. Run the Upgrade function
Call the URL http://my domain.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php. Within half a minute or so you’ll get a message that the upgrade has been done successfully.
Call http://my domain.com/wp-admin you should get redirected to your admin pages. Depending if you’ve used your old or new pass phrases, you may have to do a login, use your usual login information to do so.
Once in your admin pages you may get some messages. One of them asks you to delete blog.php. Do so using your ftp program and refresh the wp-admin pages. The message should disappear.

8. Updates and Plugins
There may be an issue with the automatic update of your plugins with Worpress 3.0.
Upon selecting one or more plugins from the “upgrade available” tab and clicking on update, the system gets stuck on “maintenance” mode.
To get out of maintenance mode you will have to use your ftp programm and delete .maintenance file manually (you should find this file on your server root.
If you can’t see the file, enable “show hidden files” in file permissions.
Return to “plugins” “active” and find the plugins that have an upgrade available, then click on the or “upgrade automatically” link. This should work. I’m hoping for a bug fix to come out soon, to resolve this issue and to be able to do bulk plugin upgrading. For now it has to be done manually.

Since I was using Google Chrome I didn’t get any error messages. Using Mozilla Firefox I got this error message:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

The slow loading of the “Write Post” page in WordPress MU is caused by the execution of a script which loads all the meta data of all the posts (wp_postmeta). I believe that my dirty install (I imported allmost 400 posts with comments from my old WP installation) caused this. I had to repeat the upload several times for each file part (can’t upload (import) 4 mega bites using the import function of WordPress, thus I broke it up into 4 parts), since the uploads wouldn’t complete correctley.

There are two ways to fix the problem. You can either edit your edit-form-advanced.php file in the wp-admin folder or you can do a clean up in your database by running a query.

Edit the edit-form-advanced.php
Open the edit-form-advanced.php file found in wp-admin folder in an html editor and navigate to line 306 (for WPMU 2.6.5). You will see the following code there:

You will have to delete this code. Save the file and upload it to your wp-admin folder. Refresh your “Write Post” screen. It should load within the usual 3 seconds. That is all, you’re done.

2. Clean up the WordPress Database using a query
To do a Database cleanup you will have to log in to your MySQL Database on your Server.
Once you are in PHP my Admin you should see your database name on top left and below all the tables it contains.
On the top of the right big window you should see a “SQL” tab. Click on it. Now paste the following code into the “execute query” window.

DELETE FROM wp_1_postmeta WHERE post_id =0;

DELETE FROM is the command line. wp_1_postmeta is the table name in MY database. You will have to change this to the name of your postmeta record name. This could be wp_postmeta or wp1_postmeta or something like it.
Hit the “execute query” button. You should get a report stating how many records where deleted. In my case there were some 3500 records with post_id=0.
After refreshing your “Write Post” window, you should get the page loaded in the usual 1-3 seconds.

I guess there may be more issues, but I only tried to resolve the above list. I emptied cache and cookies but this didn’t help. I first couldn’t believe that these problems could be caused by Google Chrome, therefore didn’t try out other browsers. But after a few days of desperate intents to solve the problem I gave up, started the Internet Explorer 7, and everything but the widget reorganizing worked fine.
Then I decided to try Mozilla Firefox, to see if it would solve the issue of the “locked” sidebar widget buttons. It did. All sidebar widget objects can be draged and dropped as supposed to by the functionallity of WordPress.
One weird thing I want to add: Until one month ago I used WordPress 2.7 and all these problems didn’t exist. All this started with my upgrade to WordPress MU!!

I will use Mozilla Firefox for WordPress MU publishing from now on, just to much hazzle with Chrome!!
